White supremacy & "white nationalism"

The two are essentially the same, it's just that "white nationalism" is an attempt to sound better.
But both are spurred by the same thing: the idea (fact!) that in a few decades, whites will no longer be the majority in America.
That's why they are anti-immigrant. And anti-non-white.
What they avoid thinking about is that short of mass sterilization or pogroms, it *is* going to happen. at best they could delay it a few years.
BTW, it might be fun arguing with them that they should *want* free birth control for minorities. It'd slow down the demographic shift. :-)
What they very carefully don't think about much less *talk* about is that the reason they are afraid is that they don't want to be treated the way *they* treat minorities. This includes giving up "white privilege".
Which makes the *real* solution almost *literally* unthinkable. Change the laws so that minorities get equal rights. That way, when (no *if*) they become a minority, they won't get discriminated against.
Of course, either way, they will no longer have white privilege so that makes it a harder sell.
But realistically, there's no way that's not going to happen eventually. And the more drastic the measures they take to try to prevent it, the worse the backlash will be.
I *hope* we can avoid a second civil war. But I'm not that optimistic.

Date: 2019-08-11 10:57 pm (UTC)Really, what we think of as 'true' democracy is a relatively new thing. [and this is probably the backlash to it.]

This is way the Bill of Rights is so important as are various anti-discrimination laws.

Date: 2019-08-11 09:33 pm (UTC)I don't think we'll get a second civil war because we don't have a neat line between "asshole white supremacist regions" and "regions that begrudgingly agree that humans should have equal rights, even if they're not willing to enforce that in practice." Or rather, I don't think we'll get anything as orderly and clear as the first civil war, and I think a lot of the battles would be fought in cyberspace.
If Texas declares itself "not part of the US anymore" and decides to enforce that with guns, that won't prevent AT&T from shutting down phone services to Texas. (I have no idea what the tech companies would do in case of violent insurrection against the government. But they might decide that the "new Republic of Texas" needs to negotiate with them about service rates, especially if the US courts demand they stop providing support to "internal terrorists.") During the first civil war, there was no phone service to interfere with.
Whether or not the tech companies would support states that try to split, if those states decide to forego US dollars and create their own currency, they'll need to renegotiate all the contracts. And hey! I bet Google, Apple, Microsoft, and AT&T would love a market that's entirely free of US business regulations! ...but while that's being worked on, the average user isn't getting their cute cat pictures, and those states will rapidly lose popular support.
And yeah. The only way through this, is overwhelming acknowledgements that (1) people of color have been treated abominably for centuries, and (2) that has to stop, and that means white people don't get the full array of advantages they've been thinking of as "everyone's rights."

It's not just phone & Internet. Also things like pipelines, electricity generation and interstate trucking. Oh yeah, airports, air travel and air freight.
Railroads existed back in the Civil War, but they are more important now (though a lot less important than they used to be.
There are things that Texas has that the US would want. Not just the other way around.
