It all started a few weeks back when a friend gave me a couple of "surplus" laptops They were part of a bunch that had been retired by a company he does tech support for.

Anyway, one had a virgin (re)install of Win 10 on it, and I played around a bit. It was designed to hook up to a docking station which had some nice extra. And they were cheap on e-bay. So I bought one. And when it arrived, I hooked it up to the monitors and keyboard/mouse on the kitchen table I use as a workbench.

This meant [personal profile] fayanora and I could resume our long lapsed weekly TV nights. We are way behand (watching shows from 2021 now) but we are making a dent in the backlog. Good thing because space was getting aa bit tight on the server.

Ok, from comments in various places (Like Steve Jackson Games' blog) I know that international shipping is still a mess. But it got brought home to me lately.

Way back at the beginning of September, I ordered some stuff from Ali Express. Yeah, yeah I know. But I've ordered similar stuff before and it wasn't too bad. *This* time however...

Estimated delivery date was October 1st. Fine.

On October 10th, tracking finally said that my stuff had "reached the region/country". I noted that it had not passed customs.

On the 29th, it all of a sudden changed to saying it was in Portland and out for delivery. Which it proceeded to keep saying (only with the date changed to the current day) until yesterday (November 5th). Which is when I heard the doorbell, and upon descending to he Front door of the building there was my package (*completely* enclosed in plastic tape!).

Now, as I understand it the big delay (Oct 10 to 29) was likely the overloaded docking situation at Us ports. Ships are sitting out there for *weeks* waiting for a chance to dock and then unload. Hopefully, this will improve with time.

The "out for delivery" bit has got me stumped.

Bad design

Since it's going to be cool today, I turned off the AC. I also decided to clean the filters since it's been a while.

Ok, washed the filters, waited for them to dry. Went to put them back. All okay so far.

Put the top cover back on. Note, the covers are different sizes and gave these helpful arrows on one side to tell you which way is up.

Top cover went one fine. Bottom cover just wouldn't go. It was getting painful crouching next to the AC (It's a portable).

So I dragged over a milk crate to sit on. Cue many more minutes of trying to make it go into place.

Finally, I decided to try something stupid. I turned the cover upside down (so the arrow was pointing down).

It slid right in.

I am *very* annoyed with whoever designed this....

I was awakened at 6am by a pain in my tight side towards the back. and I mean *pain*.

Medical TMI )
So around 8 I called 911. Basically the pain was getting to me and I was afraid it might be a sign of my hernia getting strangulated. Another thought was it might be a kidney stone.

They sent paramedics, and I managed to dig out my should bag and throw stull in it like my keys, my phone, my kindle, and an external battery.

I managed to meet the EMTs at the door. And during transport they eliminated heart attack as a possibility. They also started an IV (given the choice between a pill and IV anti-nausea meds, I went with IV because I wasn't sure I'd be able to keep a pill down, and I was pretty sure they'd want an IV at the ER anyway)

They also gave me some pain meds (Fentanyl). The pain meds didn't kick in for 20-30 minutes. And wore off maybe 30 minutes later.

They took a urine sample, and a blood sample. And I waited for a CAT scan. While I was waiting the initial pain meds wore off so when the guy for the CAT scan showed up, I requested more pain meds. Which I eventually got. And after a wait, I got the CAT scan.

Fortunately, I didn't have any trouble with the contrast agent injection. I did have some trouble holding my ams over my head the way they needed to be. Especially the one with the IV.

Finally they were done and told me it'd be about an hour for the results. So I gort wheeled back to my spot in the hall.

While waiting the meds started wearing off. It wasn't bad when I was informed that I had a 6mm kidney stone.

It was back to unbearable and I had to ask several times for more pain meds (they kept telling me they had to check with the provider.

I *finally* got them. I texted [personal profile] fayanora at 12:41 and asked her to come over to escort me home when I got released.

She got there around an hour later.

I finally got discharged sometime after 2. Fay was nice and ordered an Uber to take us to my pharmacy to get the drugs I was prescribed. We had to wait a while because of some problem with getting them thru.

We got some stuff (Orange Juice, Cantaloupe and Bananas because I was apparently really low on potassium. Still had to wait for my prescriptions.

Finally got them and Fay went to my apartment with me. I got stuff put away and took meds. Fay went home after that.

I'm okay for now, put I've got the oxycodon handy for when he pain comes back. Bleah

Wish me luck

Yesterday [personal profile] fayanora and I went to the Portland Pride festival. I hadn't been for several years even before Covid.

I think this is the last time I'm going. The long line to get in moved pretty fast. But once in, I had several problems. There was almost *no* place to sit down. And being as out of shape as I am I needed to sdtop and rest at least once per "group" of booths.

Didn't help that a lot of interesting booths had lots of people standing around them. I couldn't handling 5-10 minutes before I could get a look at stuff.

A few fun spots:

Some folks making Adirondak type furniture (one of the place I was able to sit for a bit). Their name is Adirondykes. :-)

Some interesting vibrators from Cutelittlefuckers.

I bought a dark (black & Purple) Ghost Neko at the Kumoricon booth.

Anyway, after maybe an hour and a half I texted Fay and told here I was going home.

The Storage company I deal with has a website you can make payments thru. Or rather, it has one you *used* to be able to make them thru. It hasn't worked for several months at this point.

I made a payment over the phone last month. Did it by talking to the manager.

This month I got hit with a phone menu. A horrible one.

I had to enter my credit card number using the phone keypad. Yeah, 16 digits with no possibility of erasing if you mistype. You doi get prompted for confirmation that you entered it right. Except the audio keeps fading in and out, so I had to reenter it because I missed a prompt. Then you enter the card expiration date. Then the zip code pof the address the card is associated with. then the security code.

All this on a tiny keypad on the phone.

A while back I posted about how I woke up to my computer beeping at me. Couldn't find a reason, so I shut it down. Restarted and the beeping was back.
So I wound up setting up a new-to-me computer and moving stuff to that.

Yesterday the beeping started again. Which was really annoying because all that the old & new systems had in common were the hard drives. Shut it down and switched to the Linux box that I still need to get some things set up on (getting it to recognize the NAS servers, mostly).

After an hour or two, I started it up again. I got a couple beeps then they stopped. When it finished booting the desktop only had only the wastebasket icon on it. And a program was complaining about not being able to find something on drive G: Which was the external eSATA drive.

At which point I turned off the external drive and restarted it. Windows recognized it and the icons were back.

Later when the beeping started again I carefully moved the external drive close to my ear. And *it* was the source of the beeps.

Arrrgghh.

I'll dig into things more later, but at least now I know where the problem is. Might be heat problems (though the drive case isn't that warm) might be the drive failing, dunno. But at least I know where to look

I finally fund something that actually puts on load on this thing.

I've got a program called Similarity that compare image and audio files and shows you which ones are similar (and how similar). Very useful for weeding out duplicates, near duppes, and stuff like the same image at different sizes or mirrored, etc

Still generate a fair number of false positives, but it's still a *major* help.

But when I compare some of the larger directory trees the CPU usage hits 100% (yet I can still do other things without noticeable slow-downs). The fans also spin up a *lot* and it gets kinda loud.

But I took about an hour to work on 82,000 files. Then I took an hour or so going thru the 1100 potential dupes. When I was done I only had 600 files left, most of which were things like photo sequences where someone had taken a pic every few secs or faster) so moving thru the list gave me a sort of slide so in the part of the display that showed the current image.

Hitting the down arrow fairly quickly moved along fast enough but still let me spot things that needed to be checked out

And toggling between the up and down arrows gives a nice way to compare the images visually. The parts that are the same stay steady and the parts that aren't sort of "blink".

I was kinda cold so I went into the bedroom and turned off the fan. At which point I noted that something looked wrong. Upon closer examination, not only was it *snowing*, but the grass was almost completely covered as were the (flowering!) branches of the trees!

It was in the mid 70s just the other day. Yeesh!

Well, it's a good thing I'm in the process of transferring to the new computer.

At 3 am I was awakened by a beeping noise. It turned out to be the main computer. No pattern to it. Just [beep[ [pause] [beep] [pause]....

I tried figuring out what the problem was, but windows didn't any error messages I could find. Nor were things like various temps out of range.

A few thing didn't work, and so I started closing windows to shut down. but some wouldn't respond. So I had to do a "force shutdown". And *that* was on the "shutting down" screen so long I finally just held down the power switch.

Powering back on it immediately started the beeps again and said something about the configuration not matching. Couldn't get into the setup, so I powered off.

Currently copying contents of the drive from the old to the new (plugging old drive into a spare slot).

Currently working on the one new drive that has been delivered.

Then I'll have to see if I can fit enough from the 500 gig C: drive from the old one onto the 300 gig C: drive on the new one to get things working acceptably.

If not I'll try running the new box off the C: drive from the old box until the new drives arrive.

Once I get the new box completely setup up[ with the new drives, I can put the old box on the bench and see what's hosed.

The other morning (way-too-dark-thirty) I realized my CPAP had stopped. I rolled over and the clock was off too. But the room lights were on.

Ok, not a power outage. I crawled over to where I could reach things and the clock & CPAP started up again. I tried to check the plugs and they all seemed to be ok.

A while later, it happened again. This time I managed to get to where I could see things without things coming back on. A notable item was the the power switch for the strip was lit up. So the *strip* was getting power...

But as soon as I messed with it, things came back on. *sigh*

This happened several more times throughout the early morning. I just tried to deal.

Finally, when things went out again I heard a distinct "bzzap!" noise. Something was arcing. This is very much not a good thing.

So I wound up unplugging everything from the strip and unplugging it from the wall. I searched my stock of spare cords, etc, but didn't see another power strip.

Arrgh,, that meant waiting until Albertsons opened at 6am and hoping they had some in stock.

Then I remember that I had another power strip plugged into the outlet at the foot of the bed for use if I moved some things over to this side of the room.

After more fun contortions, I managed to get it out and plugged in in place of the arcing one.

Hours later I took apart the bad strip. Only thing I found was a dust bunny a bit smaller than the cotton bud on a Q-tip, but a lot less substantial. It was sitting between the black and white wires on the power switch. There were a couple of black dots wjhere it was almost touching the wires.

That appears to be what was the problem, but I just finished disassembling the power strip and tossed the pieces in the trash. Didn't want to tempt anyone to retrieve and use it.

That was a very strange incident. I'm surprised that the dust bunny could carry enough current to cause the power to the outlets to fail, but not enough to catch fire.

The gods of electricity are weird.

First of all, I'd like to state that hot flashes suck. especially when you have just gotten comfortable in bed and were about to go to sleep. Grrr.

And for my second presentation...

I was thinking about kid's "monsters". And my mind transposed a couple of words. Thus --

The Monster Under the Closet
The Monster in the Bed

Those would certainly be different!

Finally made a bank run and Winco trip.

It's been many months since I last hit Winco, and too long since I hit the bank.

So I decided to kill two birds with one stone. I was up at 5 am and checked and found that the Winco at Gateway was open that early. And there was a branch of my bank between the MAX station and the Winco.

So I got my stuff together and left at 5:30. As I was leaving the building, I saw signs of life in Apt 1. I heard a noise, and saw that a fan was being taken out of the window and the window closed. So I guess She Who Shall Remain Nameless is still there.

Caught the 71 and transferred to the MAX at 60th. After getting off the MAX. There was the long walk past the Fred Meyer and to the bank. I *finally* deposited some checks (refunds from when my expanded coverage kicked in).

Bought too much at Winco, even though it was all stuff I needed. some staples (for me, anyway) , salads, salad and sandwich makimngs to get me thru the upcoming heat wave. Also lots of Powerade Zero.

That should get me thru the heatwave that starts tomorrow.

Got home around 9. Took a while to get the stuff that needed the fridge put away. Had a fair bit to drink (I'd been sweating like a pig the whole trip) a few bites to eat and crashed.

Oh yeah, the upcoming heat wave:

Got up to check the mail a bit ago and my missing package was standing in the hall with a note from another tenant.

Yay. Now all I have to do ia assemble it and tear apart the bed and remake it. (It's a metal replacement for the wooden slats thongs that holds up the mattress)

Got my first shot of the Covid vaccine this morning.

They had a rather interesting setup at the clinic. We'd been given appointments, but basically, whenever you showed up, they had you fill out the paperwork, think called you into get the shot as they had someone free to give it. Then it was off to a waiting room to wait and see if you had a reaction.

Went quite smoothly. I'm scheduled for the 2nd shot on April 6, so by April 20th, Fa and I should be able to get together again.

In other news, a package that was *supposed* to be delivered Monday was delivered while I was out. and seems to have vanished. Most irritated.

... and took the fan out of the bedroom window and the air conditioner adapter out of the living room window.

Y'see it snowed yesterday and last night (when I turned on the heat it was 27F outside. Inside had dropped to mid 50s in the bedroom (only used for storage) and to 66 in the living room. Brrr.

Still snow on the ground today and it is supposed to snow on and off thru the day. Not much of an accumulation (you can still still bits of grass on the lawns. But since the first snowfall was while it was still warm enough for the snow to melt when it hit the ground, there's ice under all that snow.

I also decide to order Chinese food delivered. Paid too much, but I wasn'ty walking over to the grocery store in that.

I'll have to go today or tomorrow, but I've leftovers and stuff to keep me going.

Earlier I managed to tip over the chair I use at the computer. It went over backwards and to my left.

I wound up lying on my side with my belly against small shelving unit. My flailing as I went over had knocked a lot of stuff down from the top. Plus there were a bunch of thiong that were poking me in the gut.

To top things off, I was sort of stuck, I couldn't move the chair back from the shelves using just my arms and I couldn't crawl out of it because there was too much stuff around my head, and my legs were kinda stuck in thee air.

After 5-10 minutes, I managed to move enough of the stuff near my head to slide that way. That let me get my legs to wjhere I could get them out of the chair and (eventually get onto my hands and knees.

Levering myself up to a kneeling position and then to standing wasn't easy. But I managed it.I managed to get the chair righted and sit down to compose myself for a while.

Later I had to gather up all the stuff that'd wound up on the floor. Ow. My knees were not happy.

Needless to say, a new chair has moved *way* up my list of things to get with the next stimulus check (this one is mostly gonna go for the deductibles on my medical coverage)

I was thinking about kids playing and the "game" of "keep away" came to mind.

That's where someone snatches something of someone else's and a group of kids "keep it away" from the owner. Can be harmless fun.

But usually it *isn't*. Because they'l grab it from some kid who isn't big enough to make them give it back nor fast enough to catch one of them before they toss it to someone else.

and the insight I had was that someone should stop the kids and point out that *they* may be having fun but the kid the item belongs to *isn't*. If he had a reasonable chance, then it *might* still be considered play. but as he doesn't it's turned into bullying.

After more thought, I realized this principle is *far* more widely applicable and applies to much of what is wrong with the world.

"You" (generic) may be having fun but the people you are "playing" with aren't. And that's usually because they don't have a reasonable chance against you.

This applies to various forms of harassment, power games and so on.

If we could just teach *kids* that it's *wrong* to be having "fun" at the expense of others who no longer find it remotely "fun" (if they ever did) just think what things might be like if they carried the new attitude over to when they are adults.

BTW, note how the justifications for a lot of bullying by kids amounts to "but they are just having fun". Or the more subtle "it encourages them to be stronger/faster/tougher".

The first is directly addressed by "the other kid(s) *aren't* having fun"

The second is likely best addressed by "it only 'helps' them if there's a *reasonable* chance for them to 'win'. If there isn't, it just rubs their noses in their shortcomings."

Again, consider how this carries over to adult behavior and often gets "justified" by "we went thru it, so should they" bit
kengr: (he is us)
(to give you and idea how messed up I'm feeling, I origianly had the subject line backwards. Oy)

Any, the new SSD arrived today, about the time I'd beaten the computer into submission with its temporary drive C:. In the process, I'd found that I actually *had* an image backup of the system that was only 2 days old. I hadn't realized that the Windows image backups were still working If I had, I'd have done pone more before tearing things apart.

So I got the new drive in, booted for the Windows install DVD and told it to repair the computer. Since I could point it at image backup, this was merely time consuming. I don't want to think abut how long it might have taken with a normal drive.
