The US was never intended to be a democracy. It was set up as a republic *specifically* because the founders were well aware of what happened to every single democracy on record.

Mostly "tyranny of the majority" (ie the 50%+1 get to oppress the 50%-1), but other things as well.

This is way the Bill of Rights is so important as are various anti-discrimination laws.
