Catching up

I've got a bit of catching up to do here/. so I've cut tagged this because it could get a bit long.
A week or two back, I was helping Kathy with her system. I'd gotten her a Linksys router as part of a box of stuff I'd picked up from a guy. Alas, it wasn't working out. It kept locking up.
So I made another visit and swapped it for my spare Routefinder. the solved most of the trouble, but there were still problems with her desktop system getting weird at times. So I did a re-install of Windows.
Unfortunately, after that, we couldn't get it to see the router. Her laptop worked fine. I tried a bunch of things, thinking that the ethernet drivers were messed up.
We finally gave up on it.
Last week, I got fed up with the way one of my Windows systems was messing up and did the same sort of reinstall. and wound up with a similar problem. Except for the "minor" little difference. I couldn't get TCP/IP to work. But unlike her system, I also had IPX installed to access my Netware server. And *that* still worked. Which told me that I'd been wrong about the ethernet card drivers being the problem.
And suspecting the uninstalling and reinstalling the MS TCP/IP stuff wouldn't help, I took advantage of the fact that the Netware client stuff had its own IP protocol that could be installed. I installed that and things were working again.
I sent Kathy an email suggesting that she might want to try uninstalling TCP/IP, rebooting, and then reinstalling it.
More on that later.
Tuesday, Lin came over. She's a *big* fan of Randolph Mantooth and VH-1 was having him on a program. And since they don't get cable, she figured it was a good excuse to spend the day with me between the morning "sneak preview" and the show in the evening.
There were a few glitches, such as the times she'd gotten of the fan web site not being quite right. Luckily, while the first showing was early, it wasn't before we could set up.
I cooked us a couple of omelettes during the show.
After she'd reviewed it (it was only a few minutes of the 30 minute "Where are they now?" program) she wanted to take off, unfortunately, my computer was in the middle of doing some maintenance. So we couldn't leave just then.
We found ways to amuse ourselves :-)
All I'll say is that one of my arms was sore for a couple of days from gripping my chair so hard while she beat on a few things. :-)
After we got done, she discovered that one of her legs was a bit numb. This lead to problems later..
We headed out to a store called Stuff. They buy and sell all sorts of stuff, computer & electronic stuff, etc. Lin wanted to see if they had any CBs. They had had some most times I'd been there before.
It was a long bus ride. And we mised the stop (I hadn't been there in a *long* time and you can't see the place when coming from the direction we were until you are *past* it.
So we had to walk back a few blocks. Which wasn't that easy on either of us.
We got there and I could see that the mix of stuff had shifted some since last time ( year or two back) that I'd been there. They had video tapes and DVs now as well as a lot more CDs, and not much in the way of software except for games.
I had to dig thru the CDs for Lin, which was a bit of a pain as the racks went all the way to the floor and I don't kneel well or get up again easily. The things we do fo for friends. :-)
I found one CD (Credence Clearwater Revival) and a DVD (the original version of Rollerball). Lin found a bunch of 99 cent CDs she was willing to take a chance on. And a few DVDs.
When it got added up it was a bit more than she expected. so I bought one of the DVDs she'd grabbed. Shrek (which I just finished watching a bit ago).
It was kinda hot and I hadn't felt too great a few times while we were in the store. Actually, I'd had a bit of rouble before we left, but I doidn't want to spoil things for Lin. So we needed to get someplace where we could sit down, and have some food (I told you it'd been a *long* bus ride)
We wound up walking a few blocks and eating at a Burger King. Lin wasn't super hungry, and while I was hungry, I also needed the bathroom...
So after dealing with things and eating, Lin noted a PetSmart store. So we went thru there looking for both useful items and "pervertables". We found an item I'd been looking for ever since seeing it as part of a toy. Think of it as a plastic donut with blunt spikes sticking out.
We had to walk entirely too far to another bus stop, but on the bright side, one got there about the time we did.
We got home without too much trouble, but we were both quite a bit the worse for wear.
Lin had planned to shop at the store next to my place but we had to put that off until after the evening showing of the program. It turned out to be a epeat of the moring one, but since there was no guarantee, it wasn't entirely wasted. Besides, this time she knew what was coming and was able to get just the pasrts she wanted.
But as an example of how stressed out we were after all that walking in the sun (her with her lerg bothering her and me with my "intestinal distress") we snapped at each other a couple of times while she was setting up the VCR again.
We both skipped the munch on Wednesday because were were still sore in places.
Friday, I wound up chatting with Kathy online and she get more detailed instructions on how to try to fix her system. Didn't work. I also mentioned to her that I'd seen some Zip disks for Sale at Stuff.
So we planned that I'd drop by after she got off work (she works graveyard shift) today, try to fix her system, and then head out to Stuff.
I did get her system doing TCP/IP again.
I also brought her my old Velo. Alas, I couldn't get the software to link it to her desktop working right. So I'll either have to take my laptop over next time or figure another way to load the extra games and stuff onto it. We couldn't use her laptop becasuse it doesn't have a serial port.
We headed out to Stuff and she got a few DVDs, and I got a bunch more (Predator 7 Predator 2, Harry Potter and the sorceror's Stone, and Full Metal Jacket). I also noticed some stuff I'd missed when I was there with Lin. I now have a case that'll hold my digital camera in its *small* case, as well as have room for the AC adapter, serial cable, etc. I also got a case that was intended for carrying a removable car stereo. It works well for the Velo and accessories, and fits inside the shouldbag I usually carry. And I got a nice tripod pretty cheap.
That's got things more or less up to date. Now I should probably crash.
